Canals

Photos of navigable canals taken during travels around the world are included in this section. Canals for boats and canals whose main purpose is to move water comprise the two types of canals for water.  Canals for transportation date back to at least 600 BC in ancient China. They were a primary means for moving heavy cargo for centuries, with most being put out of business by the railroads by the middle of the 20th century. Books about canals are available here. Today, canals are still important in providing freight and passenger transportation, and a major attraction for tourists and people who wish to live on their boats, and perhaps liesurely travel from city to city, in many countries of the world.
